Inspection Report No. 50-293/86-40
This refers to the routine safety inspection (50-293/86-40) conducted by
Dr. Martin McBride and Mr. J. Lyash of this office on November 25, 1986 to
December 31, 1986 at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region Inspection
Report which is enclosed with this letter.
No violations were identified during the inspection. However, during the inspec-
tion period we noted a recurrence of an offsite power loss caused by faults in
the switchyard during washing operations. We found that the plant operations
staff handled the recent power loss well, but we encourage you to explore insu-
lator design changes and other ideas that could minimize the need to wash the
yard.
