Subject:
Request for license amendment
Dear Mr. Milstein:
This letter is to request that our license be amended to allow us to possess and use up to 15 curies oflodine 125 as sealed sources. We would appreciate your assistance in expediting this request as we have a brachytherapy manufacturer who wants to ship a source to us.
Currently NIST is allowed to possess I curie oflodine 125 in any form. A brachytherapy manufacturer has approached us to calibrate Iodine 125 sources of approximately 3 curies. We have asked for a 15 curie limit because we anticipate having multiple sources here at one time. Attached is a copy of the appropriate pages from our license showing our new requested limits. Specifically, we have added a new line item P to allow us to possess 15 curies ofIodine 125 as sealed sources. New letters were assigned to items P through R.
The radiation control mechanisms to be used are those described in our Materials License Document. They include documented receipts and dispositions, leak tests at semiannual intervals using tests that can detect 0.005 microcuries of removable contamination, shielded calibrations and storage facilities, personnel dosimetry, and remote handling and viewing devices as necessary and practical for the procedure.
Thank you for your attention to this request. If you have further questions or need additional information please feel free to contact Jim Tracy at NIST.100 Bureau Drive, mail stop 3541, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-3541. liis telephor,e number is 301-975-5800; his fax number is 301-975-4893, and his email address is james.tracy@nist. gov.
