This letter refers to the routine inspection conducted by Mr. H. Gregg of this
office on September 22-26, 1986 at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 2,
Scriba, New York. Mr. H. Gregg discussed the findings of the report with

Mr. Carl Terry and other members of your staff at the conclusion of the
r
inspection.

The objective of this inspection was to review activities related to problems
with the new Ball Type 24" Main Steam Isolation Valves. Areas examined during
this inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report which is
enclosed with this letter. Within these areas the inspection consisted of
observations of the damaged parts, review of the seat leakage test of the
prototype repair effort, review of the technical justification for the modi-
fications, discussions with personnel, and review of reports concerning these
valves.
Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.
No reply to this letter is required. Your cooperation with us in this matter
is appreciated.
