Subject:

Survey of Useage for 40 & 70 Docket Local Public Document Rooms.

. During the week of June 24, 1980 through July 1, 1980 I surveyed all eighteen 40 & 70 docket LPORs. In addition to being surveyed for useage, the LPORs were surveyed for the condition of-the collection.

~

Each of the LPORs was asked the exact same questions. The questions are as follows.

1). What is the approximate number of people that use the LPDR material per year?'

2) Of the total number of persons that use the LPDR material, how would you characterize the users? (All resoondents were suggested six broad catergories of possible LPOR users. The six catergories are towns oeople or persons that live near the facility, environmentalists, students, la,<yers, officials of state and local government, and members of the press.)
3) What is the approximate number of linear feet of LPDR material stored in your library?

3a) Are there any pressing space problems in your library associated with housing of LPOR material?

3b) Approximately how much space could be dedicated to LPDR material in the future, assuming that the material continues to grow at its present rate?

4) Do you receive any licensee assistance (in the form of man-power) in maintaining of the LPDR material, and if so, how often?
5) Do you feel that keeoing and maintaining the LPDR material in your library provides a needed service to your comunity?
6) In your opinion does the amount of useage that the LPDR collection receives justify its continued presence and maintenance?

x The responses that each LPOR gave to each of the ouestions are provided on the chart that accompanies this memo. The two broadest con-clusions that can be drawn from this survey are that (1) the majority of ki 1

40 and 70 docket LPORs are underutilized and (2) the creat najority of 8811140478 881005 PDR FDIA DARKE88-411 PDR _

the LPDR librarians feel that by keeping the material in their library l they are providing a public service and that the material should not be removed even though it is seldom used, t It is my opinion that due to the public's increased awareness of nuclear matters, due in large by the accident at Three Mile Island, any l decision made to tenninate ay 40 & 70 LPDR be c refully deliberated
