Dear Sir:

Subject:

Core Spray Nozzle Weld Overlay By letter dated May 5, 1986 [ Reference b)], Vermont Yankee provided the proposed repair / design parameters to address and remedy the core spray safe end weld ultrasonic inspection indications of Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC). In order to maintain our 1986 startup schedule, your imme-diate attention to this matter relative to the next cycle of operation (Cycle

12) is requested.

Vermont Yankee recognizes that the weld overlay proposed for the core spray safe ends is an interim solution and fully expects to replace the safe ends at a future optimcl time. Such a decision will be based upon schedular constraints, consistent with our future outage schedule, and results from inspections of the overlays, consistent with assuring required levels of safety are met. I We intend to inspect the overlays at the conclusion of Cycle 12 in accor-  !

dance with the EPRI/NRC weld overlay inspection criteria, and factor such results l into our decision process as noted above. Additionally, we commit to provide you with our inspection plan for these weld overlays three months prior to the scheduled commencement date of our next (Cycle 12) outage for your review.

We trust that this informat' ion is satisfactory; however, should you have l any questions or require additional information concerning this matter, please I contact us. i Very truly yours, DOCK O 71 AL Warren P.
