Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 NUREG-0737, Item II.F.2, ICC Instrumentation System Gentlemen:

By telephone conference on March 3

and 11,

1987, the NRC requested additional information to clarify the existing Inadequate Core Cooling Instrumentation (ICCI) and the proposed upgrade described in our April 26, 1984 and January 12, 1987 submittals.

Attachment 1

provides a

summary of Beaver Valley submittals on ICCI.

A.

Existing System The existing ICCI system consists of three separate subsystems as follows:

Reactor Vessel Level Indication System (RVLIS)

Subcooling Margin Monitor (SMM)

Core exit Thermocouples (CETC)

The existing RVLIS is a microprocessor-based system that provides reactor vessel level indication to flat panel displays and a recorder.

(See December 30, 1980 submittal)

The existing SMM is a microprocessor-based system that provides the margin to saturation on an analog display.

In addition,

pressure, temperature and saturation temperature for existing pressure is available on a digital display located on the monitor (See April 21, 1983 submittal).

The existing CETC system utilizes the plant computer as the primary display with a Honeywell precision Temperature Indicator and a backup.

(See April 21, 1983 submittal)

B.

Upgrade System our April 24, 1984 and January 12, 1987 submittals described an upgrade to the ICCI system that was presented to the NRC in a meeting on March 1, 1984.

The upgrade will consist of removing the existing RVLIS, SMM and Honeywell Precision Temperature indicator and installing two Westinghouse ICC-68 ICC monitors (See Figure 1).

Inputs to each monitor will include dedicated temperature l

(including CETC),

pressure, level (RVLIS) and reactor coolant pump status.

A plasma display for each monitor, purchased to IEEE 323-74, IEEE 344-75 and IEEE 384-77 standards, will be used as the primary display (s) for reactor vessel level and subcooling margin.

In

addition, these plasma displays will be used as the backup CETC j

indication.

Attached to the January 12, 1987 submittal are some typical display pages.

The Train A monitor will also provide signals to a 3-pen recorder i

for reactor vessel level.

Compensated CETC signals will be provided from each monitor to the plant computer systems.

The Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) will be used as the primary display for the CETC as described in the April 24, 1984 submittal.

i If you have any questions on this information, please contact my office.

i Very truly yours, i

)
