RDW 5.2 MINOR I Revision 2 02-23-84 SHIPMENT OF LIMITED QUANTITIES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS 1.0 GENERAL Shipments of limited quantities of radioactive material may be shipped routinely through the mail or by other means provided that the conditions of this procedure are met.

2.0 REFERENCES

2.1- 39 CFR Chapter I, United States Postal Service 2.2 49 CFR Parts 100 to 199, Transportation 3.0 LIMITED QUANTITIES OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL (49 CFR 173.421)

Radioactive materials whose activity per package does not exceed the limits specified in the table below are excepted from the marking, labeling and specification packaging requirements given in 49 CFR and all the requirements given in 49 CFR, Subpart I, except for paragraph 173.421, if the following

! conditions are met.

3.1 'The materials must be packaged in strong tight containers such that there will be no leakage of radioactive materials under conditions j normally incident to transportation.

3.2 The radiation dose rate at any point on the external surface of the

[

package must not exceed 0.5 mrem / hour.

3.3 The removable radioactive contamination levels on the external surface i of the package do not exceed the limits specified in RDW 5.7, Section 5.

L 3.4 The outside of the inner packaging bears the marking " Radioactive."

Or, if there is no inner packaging, the outside of the packaging itself bears the marking " Radioactive."

l 3.5 The shipment must be certified as acceptable for transportation by having a notice enclosed in or on the package, included with the packing list, or otherwise forwarded with the package. The notice must include the name of the consignor or consignee and the statement, "This package conforms to the conditions and limitations specified in 49 CFR 173.421 for accepted radioactive material, limited quantity, n.o.s., UN2910." RDW 5.2 Page 2 4.0 EXCEPTIONS FOR INSTRUMENTS AND ARTICLES (49 CFR 173.422)

Instruments and manufactured articles (including clocks, electronic tubes or apparatus) or similar devices having radioactive materials in gaseous or non-dispersable solid form as a component part are excepted from the specification packaging, marking and labeling requirements given in 49 CFR and all the requirements given in 49 CFR 173, Subpart I, except for paragraph 173.422, if the following conditions are met:

4.1 The activity of each instrument or device does not exceed the relevant limit listed in Table 5.0 below.

4.2 The total activity per package does not exceed the relevant limit listed in Table 5.0 below.

4.3 The radiation level at 10 centimeters (4 inches) from any point on the external surface of any unpackaged instrument or device does not exceed 10 mrem / hour.

4.4 The radiction level at any point on the external surface of a package containing the device or instrument does not exceed 0.5 mrem / hour, or, for exclusive use shipments, 2 mrem / hour.

4.5 The removable radioactive contamination on the external surface of the package does not exceed the limits specified in RDW 5.7, Section 5.

4.6 At least one external dimension of the package is >10 centimeters (4").

4.7 The package does not contain more than 15 grams of Uranium-235.
