( Chem Lab Records Levision 6 Spdated 11-18-83 OPS Office Records Updated EVAPORATOR FEED ION EXCHANGER RESIN FLUSH & RECHARGE 1U12A, B&C & 2U12 1.0 PURPOSE 1.1 'To sluice the spent resin out of the IU12A, B, C and 2U12 ion exchangers.

1.2 To recharge the selected demineralizer with fresh resin.

-2.0 PRECAUTIONS & LIMITATIONS 2.1 Have Health Physics monitor the demineralizer (contact and general area) prior to start of sluice. Monitor the El. 26' & El. 8' level of the auxiliary building after completion of the sluice.

2.2 No unauthorized work near the sluice line during the evolution.

2.3 Resin storage tank T112 relief valve is set at 150 psig. Monitor the cask continuously during flushing operation. .Do not exceed 125 psig on resin storage tank pressure gauge.

2.4 Line up monitor tank pump to reactor makeup water header, throttle pump recirc valve to maintain 125 psig on the reactor makeup water header.

2.5 If resin storage tank T112 pressure increases to 125 psig and holds, back flushing of the resin retention element on the vent line may be required.

-2.6 Do not operate the gas stripper feed pumps during this evolution.

3.0 INITIAL CONDITIONS
3.1 Verify the following:

3.1.1 Verify the storage tank resin inlet and storage tank vent canlock connections are properly mated and securely wired into place.

3.1.2 Camlock female cap installed on the resin storage tank T112 rinse line (center penetration) with padlock installed.

3.1.3 Resin storage tank T112 discharge valve shut (WS-34) and padlock installed.

c Contact General Area 3.3.1 Permission to sluice resin to storage tank obtained from radioactive waste coordinator who was advised of the above contact reading.

3.3 If the resin being dumped is routed to the resin storage tank via the south dump header, a contact reading of the '

north header should be taken in the overhead of the north passageway before dumping. After dumping, an increased contact reading at this same location is indicative that the north header also naeds flushing due to resin carrying on past resin storage tank.

If dumping via north header, take contact reading on south

/ header as explained above.

4.0 PROCEDURE Initials 4.I' LPressurize the reactor makeup water header (reference Step 2.4).

4.2 Open the resin dump valve on the selected ion exchanger.

, CAUTION: THIS WILL ALLOW " HOT" RESIN TO FALL BY GRAVITY TOWARDS THE RESIN CASK.

CAUTION: THE RESIN RETENTION ELEMENT ON THE VENT LINE IS n LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE RESIN STORAGE TANK PROVIDING A MINIMUM AIR SPACE. USE CAUTION WHILE FLUSHING WITH HIGH FLOW RATES TO PREVENT OVERPRESSURIZATION AND LIFTING THE TANK INTERNAL RELIEF VALVE.

4.4 When Chemistry indicates the U12 bed is empty, shut the reactor makeup water valve and the resin dump valve, then j lock the resin dump valve. Lock #

4.5 Flush the resin dump header. Then survey all resin dump lines to check for any stray resin.
- 4.5.1 If a south U12 demineralizer being dumped at 1U12C, open BS-1167A to flush residual resin out of south dump header. Do not exceed 125 psig on resin storage tank. Then shut and lock BS-1167A.
