Gyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station This letter is to bring you up-to-date on meetings that GPil Nuclear has held with the NRC staff on your proposed Expanded Safety System Facility (ESSF) for Oyster Creek.

The ESSF was proposed to be built at Oyster Creek in your letter of March 11, 1985.

In that letter, you described the ESSF and stated that the ESSF would enhance the safety capabilities of Oyster Creek, improve its overall operational capability and reliability and help ensure that Oyster Creek can achieve its expected full licensed lifetime.

You requested the staff's comments on the ESSF, includina design criteria, use of surolus equipment and implementation as not involvina an unreviewed safety auestion under 10 CFR 50.59. The staff responded in its letter of April 16, 1985. The ESSF is not reanired by the staff.

In your letter of March 11, 1985, you stated that it was intended to keep the staff up-to-date on the proaress of the ESSF.

In doing this, we have had two detailed meetings on the status of the ESSF with GPU Nuclear. They were on September 20, 1985, and March 26, 1986. The staff's meeting summaries are dated November 4, 1985, and April 12, 1986, respectively.

In the March 1986 Proaress Review Meetino on licensing actions, we were informed that there will be no further meetings on the status of the ESSF until after the present Cycle 11 Refueling (Cycle 11R) outage. The Cycle 11R outage beaan April 11, 1986, and is scheduled to end in October 1986. This meeting was held with GPU Nuclear on April 22, 1986, at the Oyster Creek site.

This letter is to thank you and Mr. R. F. Wilson, Vice President and Director, Technical Functions, GPU Nuclear, for your efforts to keep the staff uo-to-date on the status of the ESSF. Mr. P. B. Fiedler May 13, 1986 meetings have been very good for this purpose. The staff looks forward to future meetings on the ESSF in FY 1987 after your restart from the Cycle 11R outage.
