The United States currently has no restrictions on the export of uranium, beyond the statutory export requirements called for by the Atc.nic Energy Act. This policy was most recently reviewed within AEC shortly before the establishment of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Energy Research and Cevelopment Administration.
Since that t!me, there have been signifle. ant changes in the world uranium market, incleding a near doubling in the world price of uranium.
This situation could have important implications for United States national security in terms of the key issue of continued availability of uranium for domestic use -- from either domestic or foreign sources -- and of the consequences of possible dependence on foreign uranium. In our view, an early interagency study of these and related uranium import issues, leading to a Presidential review of national policy on uranium export, would be of great benefit to the Nuc1 car Regulatory Commission, to other U.S. Government agencies concerned with nuclear export control, and to those agencies responsible for ensuring adequate supplies of energy for the U. S.
