assessment of the "Implications of the Accident at Chernotyl for Safety Regulation of Commercial Nuclear Power Plants in the United States,"

HUREG-1251, together with the accompanying Federal Register notice. The facts used in this assessnent have been drawn from the U.S. fact finding report (NUREG-1250) and its sources, notably the Soviet report to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the report of the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group to the IAEA.

The study's general conclusions, presented in the Sumary of NUREG-1251, are supported by detailed assessments of a number of particular issues that were associated with significant factors that led to or exacerbated the consec,uences of the Chernobyl accident. These are presented in the report's subsequent chapters.

We expect to address the implications of Chernobyl at the upcoming National j

State Liaisen Officers' meeting to be held in Bethesda, Maryland, on September 9 and 10, 1987.

Conenents concerning emergency planning as related to FEMA's areas of responsibilities will be shared with the Chief, Technological Hazards Division, State and local Programs and Support Office, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Washington, D.C.
