PHONE CALL FROM: reary Grimmett Sept 6, 1994 3:15 pm T0: Bill M N DISCUSSION:

'Maryjwanted to know if we could release the facts concerning the ORISE cross-

-contamination of.the catfish that was caught in Wingfoot Lake. She is being pressured by an individual to get the information. He apparently will not be satisfied that the lab screwed up until they prove it by providing their QA/qC records showing what happened.

I discussed it with Gary Shear while Mary.was still on the phone andj e said it was OK to see if we could get the Tecords from ORISE. I told Mar call ORISE to pursue getting sorrething and would get back with hkr. y I would I called Eric Abelquist at ORISE as soon as I completed the call with Mary; but Eric was out of the office this afternoon. I left a message for tric to call me back tomorrow.

SUBJECT:

RESULTS OF TIIE LABORATORY ANALYSIS FOR TIIE FISII SAMPLE FROM WINGFOOT LAKE, NEAR GOODYEAR AEROSPACE, AKRON, OIIIO

Dear Mr. Snell:

It is imperative that all analytical data be evaluated relative to quality control (QC) samples.

These QC samples are analyzed concurrently with the samples to validate and qualify the analytical results. The subject fish sample was analyzed by alpha spectrometry for total uranium concentration on June 13, 1994. As subsequently reported to you, the reagent blank showed activity above acceptable limits. This indicates that this analytical batch was contaminated and that results for this batch are unacceptable.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact me at (615) 576-3740. ,

Sincerely, 1

k Eric W. Abelquist v Project Leader Environmental Survey and  !
