Dear Senator Glenn:

I am responding to your April 4, 1994, request for.our consideration of a letter dated March 3, 1994, from Ms. Mary Grimmett. This letter is one of several letters received from Ms. Grimmett since March 1994, regarding the Goodyear Aerospace, Wingfoot R'esearch Facility, near Akron, Ohio. I sent you

'a letter dated April 26, 1994, which stated that we were planning to inspect the Wingfoot Research Faci?Ity, and that we would transmit our findings to you when available. The report of that inspection is enclosed. A copy of the report has also been provided to Ms. Grimmett.

Our extensive inspection activities, conducted between April and July 1994, included a review of past NRC inspection reports, a review of confirmatory surveys conducted for the NRC in 1986 by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (0RAU) in response to Goodyear's license termination request, independent NRC surveys, and the collection and analysis of numerous environmental samples.

Specifically, 26 environmental samples were collected from the Wingfoot Research Facility and surrounding off-site locations. The samples included:

drinking water, ground water, soil, fish and lake sediment samples. We also conducted direct surveys and smears for loose contamination within the Wingfoot Research Facility where licensed material was formerly used.

Based on the results of our inspection and the results of the sample analyses, we found no evidence that radioactive contamination in excess of the NRC unrestricted release limits exists at the Wingfoot Research Facility or in the nearsite environment. As a result of f his finding, we are concluding our investigations of this matter. l We hope this resolves your concerns regarding this matter. l Sincerely, Originalsigned by l James M. Taylor James M. Taylor Executive Director for Operations
