b MEMORANDUM FOR: Comissioner Roberts FROM: Sharon R. Connelly, Director Office of Inspector and Auditor SUBJECT : REQUEST FOR INVESTIGATION By memorandum dated April 14, 1987, you requested that the Office of Inspector and Auditor (0!A) initiate an investigation to determine how George E. White, dn employee of Middle South Services, obtained an NRC memorandum dated June 8, 1983, in accordance with your request 01A did initiate an investigation of this matter. However, in consideration of Senator John Glenn's press release on April 21, 1987, indicating that he was referring the entire matter concerning the handling of leaked NRC documents to the Department of Justice (00J) for its review, CIA believed it was prudent to coordinate with 00J before proceeding further in its investigation, in that regard, on April 22, 1987, I telephoned Timothy J. Reardon, !!!, who is the Principal Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and is apparently handling the referral from Senator Glenn. Af ter making sone inquiries, Mr. Reardon subsequently advised tre the same day that 01A should not proceed with its investigation, and he indicated that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) would be requested to expeditiously conduct an investigation of this matter. I advised Mr. Reardon that 0IA would  !

confirm my conversations with him in a letter, and that 01A would be available ,

to coordinate, as appropriate, with the FBI.
