September 1, 1988 Docket Nos.; 50-369 50-370 FACILITY: McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 LICENSEE: Duke Power Company
SUBJECT:
RECORD OF TELEPHONE CONVERSATION REGARDING CONTROL AREA VENTILATION SYSTEM (TACs 65649 AND t>5650)
On August 26, 1988 Messrs. D. Hood and J. Raval of the NRC called Messrs.
S. LeRoy, M. Tertaglia, B. Darling, and J. Richardson of Duke Power Company regarding Duke's proposed design riodification and associated technical specification change to the control area ventilation (VC) system for McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2.
The changes are described in Duke's letters of June 19, 1987 and February 24, 1988.
The NRC requested the following additional information:
1.
Discuss the controls for the VC system dampers. Justify the proposed change in terms of the potential for, and the consequences (i.e., personnel exposure)of,failureofthedamperintherecirculationlinewhichinfluences flow to the system filters, include all failure modes (open, closed, partially open).
To what extent can dairper failure affect operator doses due to lowereo differential pressure (i.e., recirculation dairper fails open) or increased flows (i.e., damper fails closed)?
2.
Discuss the surveillance frequency and design provisions for the detection of a failure or change in position of a VC system damper. What procedures would be followed if such~ failure / position change were to occur?
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this request affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P. L.96-511.
