Envircomental Protection Division / GM = Ga. A general ocmparative sumary is presented in table C.1 below with the average STATE-to-LICENSEE ratio values given where ocmparisons are possible. ikuever, i

many results were less than the detection limit and could not be used for ocmparative ratios. A general review of this data inlicatec reasonable correlations, allowing for analytical urcertainties. The only corparative results which were ocosistently lower (for EPD).ere the gross beta in air filter results. These differences are most likely due to the differences in the collection and counting methods, in that the GPC results are based on the monthly average of weekly data counted within 5 days of the erri of the collect period, whereas the EPD data is the value of a monthly collection. Scne decay of j

the thoron daughter gross beta %cwts in the EFD monthly samle tends to yield scnewhat lower results.

A general review of the Hatch data generally indicates no unusual results 1

except for slightly increaamd C2-134 in sediment arri fish below the Plant. This l

is nest likely due to a late-1986 spill of waste water to a swa@ area adjacent to the river. As a result of the spill, we increased the nunber of sa@linJ 4

locations on the river to watch for any possible future charges.

A general review of the Vcgtle data indicates no unusual results except for the presence of elevated levels of Cs-137 in air filter cnqposites during the last i

quarter of the year, due to a release reported by the U.S. D.O.E. Savannah River Nuclear Facility across the river fran Vogtle. Elevated Imlc of H-3 in milk i

and river water continue te bo observed, os in the pre-operational Vogtle sttriy, and which is again lartyely attributed to the U.S.D.O.E.

Enclosed is our report for 1987, as required by NRC Contract 29-83-625, for comparative, independent, environmental l

radiation monitoring for the Georgia Power Company Nuclear Plants Hatch and Vogtle.

Georgia Power Company representatives were generally cooperative in collection and splitting of samples as well as in providing comparative results for review.

Data results are presented in Attachment A for Plant Hatch and in Attachment B for Plant Vogtle.

An explanation of the data presentation format and a brief summary of results is presented in Attachment C,

followed by a summary of our environmental radiation laboratory quality assurance / quality control program in Attachment D.

Finally a statement of services rendered and man-hours expended is given in Attachments E and F.
