This was originally reported to Region V on November 28, 1975 and was reported to IE:HQ in the daily report of December 1,1975.
We are submitting this 30 day report because there is no indication tint it was sutcitted by the licensee to IE:HQ as required by 20.405(a).
While there is no inoicai. ion that any significant personnel ex;:osure or other hazard resulted, the report raises possible questions of a generic nature. While chromatography licenses utilizing tritium foils are nccerous, we are not aware of any similar' buildup of tritium in labora-tories as a result of uch use.
However, neither are we aware of any such user who makes routine or periodic surveys for tritium buildup on surfaces.
For this reason, we are cor. ducting an inquiry in an attempt to determine if anyone else has experienced a similar situation.

The licensee and his consultant will be contacted for additional in-

formation as part of the inquiry, but we do not plan a special inspec-tion or early reinspection at the subject licensee's facility.
This license was last inspected in April 1975 and a clear case 591 was issued.
We will be contacting other. licensees, State regulatory agencies, and one producer of these H-3 foils in Region V during our inquiry.
We will keep you inforced if any interesting information develops.
