,- e REPORT ON FACILITY LICENSE NO. R-102 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO AGN-201M REACTOR JULY 1, 1987 - JUNE 30,- 1988 The University of New Mexico's AGN-201M reactor continues to be used extensively for teaching experiments as a part of our undergraduate and graduate prograns. These experiments include approach-to-critical, reactor period and reactivity' measurements, importance function measurements, sample activation, control rod calibrations, and reactor power and neutron fluence meaeurements. The reactor is also used in support of our research programs. The reactor is regularly used throughout the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions of the University. All experiments have received prior approval from our Reactor Safeguards Advisory Committee and conform to radiological safety procedures developed by the University Radiation Control Committee. No modifications or experiments involving violation of the reactor Technical Specifications have been performed.

The personnel assignments for the-reporting period E.re summarized below:

Dean, College of Engineering J. E. Thompson Chairman, Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering and Reactor Administrator Frank L. Williams Chief Reactor Supervisor Robert D. As required by the "Operator and Senior Operator Requalification l Program", a retraining session was conducted on June 22, 1988.

l An operator training program was conducted in the 1987-88 l academic year. -There were three operator trainees, Ken Carpenter,  !

Richard Teeter, and Jim Clark. The training sessions were held on Sept. 2, 16, 23, 30, Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 4, 18, and Dec. 2. In addition, a number of hours of reactor operations were scheduled for each operator trainee. An NRC Examination was. scheduled for the trainees. Ken Carpenter and James Clark were administered and satisfactorily passed the NRC examination for Senior Reactor Operators.

Doing monthly maintenance checks of September 1987 it was found that the scram relays of Channel Three (3) protective channel had welded themselves shut. Theory is that they either did'so on the last scram or during a number of power outages occurring in the two week period prior to the maintenance checks. The' relays were. unable to be repaired or replaced due to unavailability. Therefore the operating circuitry was replaced and slightly modified to operate a l new set of relays for Channel Three. The characteristics and response time for associated circuitr-f and relays are equal.to or better than those that were replaced. j The AGN-201M Reactor Facility is an essential part of our educational program, including public education, and continues to serve us well. The use of the reactor from July of 1987 through June of 1988 was as follows:
