i The University of New Mexico's AGN-201M reactor continues to be used extensively for l teaching experiments as a part of our undergraduate and graduate programs. These experiments i include approach-to-critical, reactor period and reactivity measurements, importance functions 4

measurements, sample activation, control rod calibrations, and reactor power and neutron fluence measurements. The reactor is also used throughout the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions of the University. All experiments have received prior approval from our Reactor Safeguards Advisory Committee, i The following personnel assignments for the reporting period are summarized below:

Dean, College ofEngineering Paul Fluery j Chairman, Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Joseph Cecchi i

Due to the tailure of the Channel 2 meter in the Fall of 1994, the facility was shutdown from that time until the revised technical specifications were approved. Changes were necessary in the tech i specs as the newer model Channel 2 meter would not have complied with the existing technical {

specifications. We received approval of our revised technical specifications in mid November 1995.

From then until early February 1996, we replaced our channel 2 instrumentation with the newer model. At that time, we performed our annual surveillance and ascertained that all reactor systems l were in proper operating order. Then we operated throughout the rest of the year with the new  !

Channel 2 meter and the existing Channel 3 meter to check the operability of the new instrumentation.

Everything operated in accordance with the technical specifications. (As the old Channel 2 meter had failed in the Fall of 1994, it was not possible to perform a side-by-side checkout of the two Channel 2 meters). The AGN-201M Reactor Facility is an essential part of our educational program, including public education, and entinues to serve us well. The use of the reactor from July of 1995 through June of1996 was as follows:

Type of Use July 95 - June 96 Hours Faculty Research 10.0 l Teaching 20.8 i Operator Training and Requalification 8.5 l Graduate Student Research 1.0  !

Class Demonstration 1.1 l Total for Year 41.4 i
