REPORT ON FACILITY LICENSE NO. R-102 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO AGN-20lM REACTOR JULY 1, 1986 - JUNE 30, 1987 The University of New Mexico's AGN-20lM reactor continues to be used extensively for teaching experiments as a part of our undergraduate and graduate programs. These experiments include approach-to-critical, reactor period and reactivity measurements, importance function measurements, sample activation, control rod calibrations, and reactor power and neutron fluence measurements. The reactor is also used in support of our research programs. The reactor is regularly used throughout the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions of the University. All experiments have received prior approval from our Reactor Safeguards Advisory Committee and conform to radiological safety procedures developed by the University Radiation Control Committee. No modifications or experiments involving violation of the reactor Technical Specifications have been performed.

The personnel assignments for the reporting period are summarized below:

Dean, College of Engineering (acting) Richard Williams Chairman, Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering and Reactor Administrator Frank L. Williams Chief Reactor Supervisor Robert D. o .. s As required by the "Operator and Senior Operator Requalification program", retraining sessions were conducted on July 29 and 30, 1986.

An operator training program was conducted in the 1986-87 academic year. There were four operator trainees, Samantha Lapin, Richard Teeter, Charles Williamson, and Jim Clark. The training sessions were held on 20 Feb 87, 27 Feb 87, 6 Mar 87, 13 Mar 87, 27 j Mar 87, 3 Apr 87 and 10 Apr 86. In addition, a number of hours of reactor operations were scheduled for each operator trainee. An NRC Examination has not been scheduled for the trainees at this time.

l An application for re-licensing of the AGN-201M facility was submitted to the USNRC in June of 1986. This included revisions of our security plan and safety analysis report, as well as changes in the format of the technical specifications. On March 24, 1987, the

! USNRC issued Amendment #3 to the facility license renewing the operating license for 20 years from its date of issuance.

The AGN-201M Reactor Facility is an essential part of our educational program, including public education, and continues to serve us well. The use of the reactor from July of 1985 through June of 1986 was as follows:
