Unit 1 was base loaded for.100% of the period after returning to the line on September 2, 1979.

The unit had l

been shutdown for steam generator leakage repair on l

August 29, 1979.

A Point Beach' Nuclear Plant record time i

of three days and 22 hours2.546296e-4 days <br />0.00611 hours <br />3.637566e-5 weeks <br />8.371e-6 months <br /> for a steam generator tube repair outage was set when the unit was returned to the line on September 2, 1979.

The use of mechanical plugs played an important role in setting the new record.

The leaking tube, at location R20C37 in the "A"

steam generator, was found upon reanalysis of a previous eddy current test to have had an 88% defect at that time, the defect being very difficult to discover however behind a very noisy signal.

A second tube at R7C44, this with a 31% defect, was also plugged as a conservative measure.

Core stretch operation commenced on September 26, 1979.

Licensee Event Report No. 79-14/03L-0 reported the discovery of a fine crack in the Unit 1 "B" charging pump I

block between the Nos. 1 and 2 cylinders. The cracked block was replaced with a new sp'are, and the pump was returned to service.

Two charging pumps were available at all times as required by the Technical Specifications.

Twenty-eight (28) new fuel assemblies have been received, inspected and placed in the spent fuel pit in readiness for refueling.

Work is continuing on IE Bulletins 79-02, anchor bolt inspection,and 79-14, seismic analysis for as-built safety-related piping systems. Work began on IE Bulletin 79-17, inspection of lines containing stagnant borated water.

No other major safety-related maintenance vas performed I

during the period.

The unit was shutdown for fourteen (14) hours on l

September 29, 1979, to repair the "D" moisture separator reheater drain valve.

The valve had been malfunctioning, causing intermittent low feedwater supply pressure at the suction of the feed pumps.

This problem had previously I

necessitated reducing load to 475 MWe for a 72 hour8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br /> period l

September 19-20, 1979.

i Power Supply requested on ten occasions that load be reduced to an average of 385 MWe for an average duration of four hours each.

Load was reduced to 345 MWe for four hours on September 9, 1979, to conduct turbine stop valve tests.

The unit generated its 25 billionth kilowatt-hour of electricity on September 8, 1979.

2 During the shutdown for moisture separator drain valve repair on September 29, 1979, the "B" main steam isolation valve failed to close upon demand with approximately 201 steam flow.

Tne packing was loosened, the valve then closing.

Past experience indicates that the reverse type check valve I

would have closed in high steam flow conditions.
