June 10, 1986 Ms. Vida Hill

Dear Ms. Hill:

I apologize for taking so long to respond to your May 13, 1986, lettertomk.

but as I explained to you during our telephone conversation of May 31. I was out of the office for a two week seminar. Your letter to me, as well as those to Comissioner Asselstine and George Mulley of our Office of Inspector and Auditor essentially complain that you have not ben formally advised of the results of the investigations that the Office of Investigations (01) conducted as a result of allegations that you made over a year ago. Let me restate for the record what I told you during our telephone conversation.

The allegations that you raised have been investigated by O! and the investi-gative results documented. Mr. Herr infonns me that he had prepared a package to be sent to you, but that he could not send it until such time as 01 determines that the information could be publically released. As I explained to you, it is' our belief that the public release of these documents at this time could adversely affect a current 0! investigation. It is our view that these reports could be released once we have initiated field work on that investigation. At this juncture, we anticipate that we could release these documents to you within the next two months.

I recognize that you have waited an inordinate length to time for feedback regarding a matter that is very important to you. We had ho issues much more quickly, but our chronic lack of resources, ped to resolve coupled these with the emergence of some higher priority matters, interfered with all our expectations.

On a more personal note, I want to say once again how appreciative I am of the l cooperation and suppo'rt that you gave me during my visits to Wolf Creek. I am particularly sorry if our ostensible lack of responsiveness has in any way led to misgivings on your part for having cooperated with us. Please understand that we really do appreciate your efforts and your continued interest.

In closing, as I told you during our conversation, please feel free to call me collect if you have any additional questions or information that you wish to pass to the NRC. And please be sure to tell your granddaughter that I was indeed very impressed with how well she answers the telephone at this rate, by the time she is 4 years old she will be taking messages for you.

Best Regards,

/a/

William Ward, Assistant to the Director Office of Investigations Distributions:
