Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 APPEHDIX R REANALYSIS

Dear Mr. Denton:

As part of an enc 1csure to a letter from Mr. O. W. Dixon to Mr. H. R. Denton dated Sept. 4,1985, South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) submitted a schedule for completion of modifications required for compliance with ctrrent clarifications / interpretations of Appendix R.

This letter was submitted in l

accordance with an agreement between the staff and SCE&G reached during a Cicet-l ing on July 24 and 25,1985.

In a continuation of that agreement, we are l

providing the following update to the Table 14.0.

The seventh line entry titled

" Upgrade Chiller B Control Transfer Switch" had an original estimated coopiction date of 3/1/86. This date is now estimated to be 3rd Refueling (2nd Qtr.

1987).

l The engineering work for this modification is near completion and all materials are on site but the complexity and the difficulty of installing the modification while online has caused us to extend our completion of the modificatiori. The l

delay in implementation has a negligible impact on risk to the public since the compensating actions of a functionally equivalent jumper procedure and a special roving fire watch will remain in effect untti the modification is complete.

The enclosed letter and attachments have been provided to Region !! as a status report on our progress in the area of Appendix R reanalysis and modification.

As discussed with your staff February 24, 1986, a progress / status meeting held at NRR during the week of March 10, 1986 could be very constnJctive in resolving any remaining open items in support of the on-going technical review. Also, participation by appropriate members of the Region !! staf f may be beneficial so l

that all parties will have a full and current understanding of the issues.
