ROD CLUSTER CONTROL GUIDE THIMBLE PLUG REMOVAL We have corrpleted our review of the information you transmitted by letters dated April 22 and August 30, 1985 related to your plans for removing rod cluster control (RCC) guide tube thimble plugs at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit Nos. I and 2.
Although the RCC guide tube thimble plug removal can be perfonned under 10 CFR 50.59, we did express interest in reviewing your safety evaluation regarding this matter. The safety evaluation report titled " Prairie Island Units 1 and 2 Safety Evaluation for RCC Guide Thimble Plug Removal NSPNAD 8412" dated April 1985 was submitted for this purpose.
Based on our review of your information, we conclude that there will not be any adverse reduction in the safety margin due to your planned modifications for both units; therefore, the operation of Prairie Island Unit Nos. I and 2 with the RCC thimble plugs removed is acceptable.
A copy of our safety evaluation is enclosed.
