SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT en 1986 - 900,000 KW - Unit I cc WESTINCHOUSE SAFETY CRADE CORE EXIT THERMOCOUPLES, ITEM 215

Dear Dr. Grace:

On May 28, 1985 CP&L notified the NRC of a reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21 concerning Westinghouse Safety Grade Core Exit Thermocuples.

CP&L issued the third interim report concerning this item on December 20, 1985 (NRC-409) projecting completion of corrective action and the final report by March 1, 1986.

On February 25, 1986, CP&L received a telecopy of a Westinghouse to NRC (J. M. Taylor) letter NS-NRC-86-3099 dated February 20, 1986 addressing the subject thermocouples. This letter provided significantly different information to the NRC concerning the scope, safety implication, and corrective action on the subject item from that previously reported.

Due to the significant changes in the reportability information provided and the need for a detailed evaluation by CP&L of the problem and potential courses of action, a formatted interim report is not being provided at this time. Upon completion of an evaluation of the information provided, CP&L will provide a fourth interim report. CP&L is pursuing this matter, and it is projected that submission of a detailed report will be accomplished by March 21, 1986.
