SUBJECT:

COMSECY-96-056, HIGH-LEVEL WASTE (DSI 6)  ;

Based on the public comments and the stakeholder meetings, I see little, if any, bads to depart from the Commission's preliminary decision on DSI 6 that selected Option 3 (Maintain NRC's existing HLW program).

The Commission's preliminary decision specifically requested public comment on what additional activities NRC might reasonably undertake. The staffs analysis of comments indicated that commenters did not speak to this question but made some related comments. I would encourage the staff to consider the merits of these comments to the extent that they can be accommodated within the existing program and within existing budgets. l l
