WATERFORD, Conn. ( AP) --The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has admitted it provided Northeast Utilities (NU) with the names of employees who were acting as confidential whistleblowers in an investigation of the utility.

Nine whistleblowers were exposed in December 1995 while the NRC was investigating allegations that workers who complained about problems at the utility's nuclear plants were being mistreated.

Two of the informants were still employed by the utility when they were exposed. The official who made the mistake was removed from the whistleblower investigation, according to NRC documents obtained by The Day of New London.

A report stemming from the whistleblower investigation concluded that supervisors at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station harassed workers who raised safety concerns at the plant.

As a result of the report, Northeast Utilities was ordered to hire an outside contractor that will have the sole responsibility for monitoring how the company handles employee concerns.

The NRC must approve the choice of the contractor.

All three Millstone plants are shut down because of widespread safety problems. Management's failure to address concerns raised by employees has been cited by the NRC as a primary reason for the problems.
