Dear Fellow NU Nuclear Employee:

While I won't officially join you at Northeast Utilities until next week, I i want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and give you an idea of some of the areas I'll be talking with you about when I arrive. ,

First and foremost, I look forward to working with all the men and women at Millstone, Connecticut Yankee and Seabrook. By now, you probably know that I began my career at Millstone Station after leaving the U.S. Navy in 1970.

Looking back at my time with NU, what I remember most clearly is the pride that we had in our nuclear operations. It was the kind of pride that every nuclear organization needs to be successful, and it's the kind of pride that i we need at NU Nuclear now, j In my first two weeks, I will meet with employees and management teams at Millstone and Connecticut Yankee to get as much of your input as possible.

I'll meet with Seabrook employees later in the month because I need to focus my attention on our Connecticut plants first. In the third week of i September, I will announce our new " recovery organization" to get us  !

immediately on the path to significant improvement. This will include help from industry and other outside organizations, This may not be our long-term organization, but it will be what we need right away for recovery.

During the past several months, I have followed the difficulties you've experienced, and since accepting this position, have studied the assessments and have been briefed by Bernie Fox, Ted Feigenbaum and the NU Board of Trustees. But all the reports and briefings in the world can't take the place of a first-hand look at the situation.

I know how frustrating the current situation is for every Nuclear Group employee. I also know that my arrival and the uncertainty about changes I'll be making will lead to additional stress for these next three weeks.

But I want to move fast to keep the period of uncertainty short and to get 4 us on our road to recovery quickly. I Bernie Fox and the Board have given me authority to implement any changes I feel necessary to turn things around. I come to this new position with many ideas, but I also come with an open mind. You, our employees, are the key to 4 our future success. No changes will be made until I have received a lot of input from the organization.

i We will face many challenges in the months to come. You can expect clear, '

candid communications from me, and I'll expect the same from each of you. I 9611010024 961024 -
