TASK INTERFACE AGREEMENT (TIA 95-10) TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST, SERVICE WATER POND MODEL ADEQUACY AT CATAWBA NUCLEAR POWER STATION (TAC NOS. M95256 AND M95257)
The Plant Systems Branch reviewed Region II's August 14, 1995 technical assistance request to re-evaluate the service water pond model adequacy which serves as the ultimate heat sink (UHS) at the Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2.
As a result of that review we requested assistance from the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) because of the hydrological engineering expertise needed to evaluate transient heat analyses of UHSs.
NMSS completed its review and provided a safety evaluation of the pond's adequacy in a memorandum to you dated October 29, 1996. We have reviewed the NMSS evaluation and concur with its conclusions that the service water system pond at Catawba is adequate to perform its safety function. We believe the HMSS evaluation adequately responds to the region's concerns regarding the capability of the service water pond at Catawba.
