UPCOMING LLOYD' HEARING ON HEU/ LEU FUEL CONVERSION The hearing on research and test reactor fuel conversion will take place as scheduled on Tuesday, September 25,1984, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 2318. Rayburn House Office Building. This hearing is being held , jointly by two Subcomittees of the House Committee on Science and Technology: Energy Research and Produc-
. tion (Lloyd) and Energy Development and Applications (Fuqua). Representatives Lloyd, Fuqua, Walker, Volkmer, and MacKay may be expected to attend. Con-gressman Volkmer's district includes the University of Missouri at Columbia research reactor. Copies of his recent correspondence concerning this reactor and NRC's response are attached. Congressman MacKay's district includes the University of Florida's.research reactor at Gainesville. ,
. A draft witness list prepared by the Subcomittees .is attached. The NRC Comissioners will be the first witnesses.
In questions directed to NRC, we expect that members will focus on:
o Is. conversion necessary and, if so, for national security reasons or
, nonproliferation policy reasons?;
o Cost estimates, licensing procedures, and other impacts of conver-sion; and o Who should pay for conversion if it is . required?
The Subcomittees plan to request detailed information for the hearing record -
on the costs of conversion.
