~McGuire Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370

Dear Mr. Denton:

This lettar is in response to a request by the NRC Staff to clarify a license

- amendment request regarding Generator Time Overcurrent Protection for the diesel generators at McGuire Nuclear Station. This license amendment request

'was made in an August 31, 1984 letter from H. B. Tucker to H. R. Denton.

The proposed amendments seek to implement a Generator Time Overcurrent Protection and an Instantaneous Overcurrent Protection for, the' diesel generators. The Generator Time Overcurrent Protection trips the associated diesel generator breaker in the event of a multiphase fault on the switchgear buss to prevent destruction of the diesel generator. In the initial submittal

'of this license amendment request, the Generator Time Overcurrent Protection

. was described as a diesel generator trip similar to engine overspeed lube oil pressure and generator differential. However, it is a diesel generator breaker trip. Likewise the Geaerator Instantaneous Overcurrent Protection will protect the diesel generators during testing periods, be bypassed in the' event of an accident condition, and trip only the diesel generator breaker.

The proposed technical specification has been revised to clarify this (see attached). All other justifications and analyses continue to be valid with this clarification incorporated.

Please contact us if there are further questions regarding this matter.

.Very truly yours, h$. ? /&
