Atlanta, Georgia 30323 CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY SHEARON IIARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT 1986 - 900,000 KW - UNIT 1 PROCESS I&C SYSTEM CABINETS - WELDING DEFICIENCIES, ITEM 177

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On June 8,1984, Mr. N. J. Chiangi notified the NRC (Mr. A. Hardin) of a potentially reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21. The NRC was informed that welding deficiencies were identified in four Unit 1 Westinghouse Process I&C System Cabinets.

CP&L is currently waiting on an evaluation of the welding deficiencies from Westinghouse.

For this reason, we will require an extension until September 30, 1984 for submitting a report on the reportability of this item.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Yours very truly, M
