Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On January 20, 1984, Mr. K. V. Hate' notified the NRC (Mr. A. Hardin) of a potentially reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(c) and 10CFR, Part 21. The NRC was informed that seismic HVAC ductwork fabricated by Pullman Construction Industries,Inc.
does not meet design specifications. Some of the fabrication occurred prior to CP&L approval of the applicable portion of Pullman's Duet Construction Manual. The ductwork was accepted by CP&L.
In our February 17, 1984 letter, we it.fccmed you that preliminary investigations of the potential generic situation between PCI and Ebasco indicate that differences impacting seismic qualification of ductwork may exist between Ebasco design documents and PCI fabrication documents. The significance of these discrepancies were being evaluated.
To date, 63% of the suspected ductwork has been evaluated and determined to be acceptable. Delays in receiving vendor information needed on the remaining ductwork has caused us to require additional time to complete our evaluation. It is currently projected that we will require until June 20, 1984 to complete our evaluation and report on the reportability of this item.
