Mr. L. Hanning Huntaing.

Director of Regulation Atomic Energy Coemission Washington, D. C. 20545

Reference:

Florida Power & Light Company Turkey Point No. 3 i Main Steam Ejection

Dear Mr. Muntzing:

As a major supplier of fabricated piping to the utility industry and the fabricator of most of the piping for Florida Power and Light's Turkey Point nuclear generating station, we wish to express our concern at the way in which our name and that of U. S. Steel Corporation, our pipe supplier, were mentioned in recent telegrams to utilities emanating i from your office.

We had seen copies of several of the telegrams sent to the utilities by your district offices and had already written to Mr. O'Reilly, Region I I director. We are now even more concerned by the printing of the text of these telegrams in Vol. 18 - No. 1 of the publication of the Atomic Energy Clearing House which receives broadcast distribution.

[

The wording of the wire sent out to the operating companies has resulted in numerous phone calls and contacts from utility executives

and consulting engineers. The nature of their questions leaves no
doubt that their first impression from your telegram was that the failure was probably due to faulty material or workmanship on Dravo's i part which was definitely not the case as proven by subsequent investi- 1 gation.

1

! We are not concerned about those companies that contacted us be-I cause we have explained the facts to them. We are concerned, and greatly sc, about the companies, consulting sagineers, and individuals who have not contacted us.

We had originally requested from Mr. O'Reilly the names of all companies receiving the subject telegrams and still would like to have this list. However, with publication in the Atomic Energy Clearing House, the problem takes on new dimagstons.

Mr. L. Manning Muntzing, Director of Regulation Atomic Energy Commission January 12, 1972 Page 2 We feel that .the only proper action under the circumstances is to have your office send a telegram to all the recipients of your original telegram clearly stating that investigation has shown that the failure was not due to faulty material or workmanship on the part of Dravo l Corporation or our supplier, U. S. Steel Corporation, and to see that this telegram also is published in the Atomic Energy Clearing House j publica tion.

This matter is of extreme concern to Drayo Corporation and we would l

appreciate prompt, ,wsitive action by ycur ice.
