Dresden Station Unit 2 Investigation of Core Spray Safe End Cracks NRC Dkt. No. 50-237

Dear Mr. Fiorelli:

  • 1 A preliminary report concerning the subject crack was sub-mitted to you by letter from B. B. Stephenson dated February 6, 1975.

As indicated in that report, the safe end dutchmen sections con-taining the cracks will be removed. These sections will be sent in total to Argonne National Laboratory for sectioning and metallurgical investigation. This is expected to occur next week.

After the safe ends reach Argonne, the first step in the in-vestigation will be a complete NDE to determine the exact condition of the sections. The' estimated time for the NDE .is one week. Based on the NDE results, the remaining investigative program will be de-fined. A meeting will then be held at Argonne with all interested parties to concur in the program for investigation and disposition of the safe ends. We estimate the meeting will be held during the week of February 24. If you are interested in obtaining specimens from the safe ends for your evaluations, you are requested to pro-vide a written description of the specimens or participate in.the meeting at Argonne. Mr. D. P. Galle will notify your Mr. Johnson concerning the exact time and place of the meeting. If you prefer to send a written request, it should be sent prior to the meeting.

Should you desire to participate in the NDE, or if we can be

.of any further assistance in this matter, please contact this office.
