Dear Mr. Eisenhut:
Fast Cold Starts of Diesel Generators Generic Letter 83-41 The Commission's letter dated December 16, 1983 requested in-formation concerning fast cold starts of diesel generators (i.e.,
starts with rapid acceleration and loading without prelubrication and wa rmup).
The emergency diesel generators at the Port Calhoun Station are provided with prelubrication and warmup capabilities.
Therefore, the diesels have never been subjected to a fast cold start.
The diesels are kept warm and ready for starting by a jacket water immersion heater.
In addition, a lube oil pump circu-lates oil when the diesel is not operating.
This oil is j
warmed by flowing through the lube oil heat exchanger.
Based on this, the concerns expressed regarding fast cold starts of diesel generators affecting reliability and avail-ability are not viewed as being applicable to the Fort Calhoun Station.
