Attached is an interim report on the subject. item which was deemed ' reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21, on November 14,1983. CP&L is pursuing this matter, and it is currently projected that corrective action and submission of the final report will be accomplished by February 17,1984.

Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1.

10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21, reportable deficiencies:

Potential defect with engine mounted electrical cable on

'the emergency diesel generator engine. Purchase Order NY-435079.

ITEM:

Engine mounted electrical cables of the Emergency Diesel Generator Sets.

SUPPLIED BY:

Transamerica DeLaval, Inc., Oakland, California.

NATURE OF i

DEFICIENCIES:

In September, 1982, Transamerica DeLaval, Inc. notified CP&L of a potential problem with~ engine mounted electrical cables. 'These cables are located on the engines of the generator sets; one cable runs from the magnetic pickups to the. engine junction boxes..The second' cable is the multi-conductor cable which runs from the "on-engine" terminal box to.the Woodward governor-actuator.

Transamerica DeLaval has determined that the manufacturer's temperature rating for.the cable insulation may be exceeded during operation of-the diesel generator.

CORRECTIVE.

ACTION:

Existing cables are to be replaced by cables sent to CP&L by Vendor.

Replacement cables have been shipped to CP&L for installation in the:two engines. This installation is to begin in mid-January, 1984.

FINAL REPORT:

It.is currently projected that work on this cable replacement will be complete by February 3, 1984. A final report is expected to be released on February 17, 1984.
