Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413. -414 NRC Bulletin No. 88-04 Potential Safety-Related Pump Loss Revised Descriptic,n of Actions in Progress (TACS 69898 and 69899)

Reference:

Letter from M.S. Tuckman to NRC, Description of Actions Completed or in Progress for Oconee, McGuire, and Catawba Nuclear Stations, dated January 10, 1991 Gentlemen The reference letter transmitted the status of long-term corrective acti.ons for various safety-related pumps for Oconee, McGuire, and Catawba Nuclear Stations. The purpose of this letter is to notify the NRC of a change in the status of actions in progress for Catawba's NV Boric Acid Transfer (BAT) Pumps and to correct an error in the reference letter regarding the status of actions for Catawba's Component Cooling (KC) Pumps.

Catawba NV BAT Pumps Catawba evaluated the potential condition for any safety-related system with a pump and piping system configuration which could result in dead heading one or more of the pumps.

As a result of this evaluation, it was discovered that the BAT pumps shared a common miniflow recirculation line.

Catawba committed to developing procedures governing quarterly testing on the BAT pumps to verify that no strong pump / weak pump interaction l

existed by June 1, 1991.

Due to the unavailability of actual performance curves for the pumps, Design Engineering is unable to develop adequate acceptance criteria.

Performance is currently developing actual head curves and measuring pump flowrate using ultrasonics.

The above information is vital in order for Design Engineering to develop acceptance criteria for quarterly testing of the BAT pumps.

e Document Control Desk page 2 June 18, 1991 Performance will supply Design Engineering with the necessary information by September 1, 1991.

The procedure for quarterly testing of the BAT pumps will be developed by October 31, 1991.

Catawba KC pumps In the reference letter, it was incorrectly stated that the minimum flow line setpoint changes were sent to the station and a minimum flow test was performed to verify the new setpoint. Although the minimum flow line setpoint changes were sent to the station, the setpoint changes and post-modification miniflow verification test have not yet been performed.

They will be performed by December 31, 1991.
