, reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). It had been determined that verification'of anchor bolt material type was not being performed when identifying tags were lost, but instead a dimensional check of the bolt against the design drawings was used.
Since several different ASTM grades of anchor bolts were being installed, and some of these were dimensionally identical, all a'rk,r bolts were suspect.
On June 1, 1983, we stated in our memo NRC-83 that an investigation of the problem had reduced the number of suspect bolts to approximately 250, and that these were being evaluated by engineering. Our evaluation program consisted of taking hard-ness readings and/or doing a chemical analysis of each bolt to identify it.
We have subsequently realized that we had a misunderstanding of the scope of the problem. Instead of 250 bolts, we narrowed the scope to 250 bolt numbers, i.e.
AB 1, AB 12, etc. Since there are over 100 each of some bolt numbers, the actual total number of individual bolts now suspect is approximately 2,400.
Based on this change in the scope of the evaluation. required, we request an extension until January 4, 1984 for submitting a report on the reportability of this item.
