Attached is our second interim report on the subject item which was deemed reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) on April 26, 1983. CP&L is pursuing this matter, and it is currently projected that corrective action and submission of the final report will be accomplished by September 23, 1983.

. NATURE OF DEFICIENCY:

The subject Unit 1 equipment has been received at the site.

Several welding deficiencies were noted when the-equipment was inspected as compared to the vendor drawings.

OCCURRED: -

-The problem was identified during receipt inspection on March 17, 1983.

DATE PROBLEM' REPORTED:

On April 1,1983, CP&L '(Mr. K. V. Hate') notified the NRC (Mr. A. Hardin) that this item was potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).

On April 26, 1983, CP&L (Mr. N. J. Chiangi) notified the NRC (Mr.~ A. Hardin) that this item was reportable under 10CFR50. 55(e).

4 SCOPE OF PROBLEM:

'The equipment was manufactured in three (3) sections.

will be bolted together and installed as a single unit.

Deficient. welds were identified in each section; eight (8) welds, total.

1 SAFETY IMPLICATIONS:

Seismic qualification of the subject panel is required to assure structural-integrity during a seismic event.

Safety-related components are located in the cabinet; i-thus, structural failure would jeopardize operation of.

the safety-related equipment.

REASON DEFICIENCY IS REPORTABLE:. Welding inspection at the site was done using the vendor's QA manual (QCP 5.3).

l CORRECTIVE A CTION:

CP&L originated a Field Change Request (FCR-AS-2879) to have the welds repaired by site personnel. The welds have been repaired.

The vendor has been given a copy of the weld deficiency report, the rework done, and has been requested to provide comment and an analysis.

CP&L letter with this information and request is HO-83158 dated May 9,1983.

PREVENTATIVE ACTION:

The vendor has been instructed to rigorously follow his QA manual for Unit 2 equipment.

FINAL REPORT: A final report will be issued when the vendor completes his comments and analysis. Efforts to complete this analysis have been delayed by the vendor's external analyst facility. Completion is scheduled for August 31, 1983.

A final report will he issued after CP&L review.

Scheduled report date is September 23, 1983.
