1986 900,000 KW - UNITS 1 & 2 WELDING DEFICIENCIES IN THE MAIN STEAM /FEEDWATER SUPPORT FRAMES, ITEM 121 gA

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On March 18, 1983, Mr. N. J. Chiangi notified the NRC (Mr. A. Hardin) of a potentially reportable item per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21.

Mr. Hardin was informed that two Bergen-Paterson Main Steam /Feedwater Support Frames received at the site potentially have weld deficiencies similar to those found in another frame fabricated by the same sub-vendor.

On April 18, 1983, we informed you that the frames were being' inspected at the site to assure that similar deficiencies did not exist. At that time, we requested an extension until June 17, 1983 to complete our evaluation and submit a report on the reportability of this item.

Since April, we have examined frames C-1-195 and C-1-189, using ultrasonic techniques and radi-ography, and have found no evidence of " slug welding". Ultrasonic testing was performed by Briggs Engineering Company, under contract to Bergen-Paterson, and was completed on April 19, 1983. Radiography was performed by CP&L N.D.E.

personnel and was completed in May, 1983. Neither ultrasonic testing nor radiography revealed any evidence of " slug welding" on either frame. The report on the ultrasonic test has not been received from Bergen-Paterson; therefore, we have not completed our evaluation on this item.

For this reason, we are requesting an extension until July 15, 1983 for submitting a teport on the reportability of this item.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Yours very truly, 3 - s 8306280463 830617 PDR ADOCK 05000 R. M. Parsons S
