ASTM A325 NUTS ON ASTM A490 BOLTS

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On July 2,1982, the NRC (Mr. A. Hardin) was notified by Carolina Power &

Light Company of an item considered potentially reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). The NRC was informed that two structural steel bolted connections in the Unit 1 Turbine Building were found to have excessive gaps after tightening and several ASTM A490 bolts had ASTM A325 nuts instead of the required ASTM A490 material nuts.

The intent of this letter is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company has not been able to complete its evaluation concerning this matter. Ebasco Services has designed a test procedure to permit evaluation of mis-matched nuts and bolts for acceptability. The testing will be performed by Carolina Power & Light Company at the Shearon Harris Energy and Environmental Center Materials Laboratory. Evaluation of the gaps between connecting structural members is in progress by Ebasco.

It is now anticipated that the reportability evaluation will be completed by October 15, 1982, at which time the NRC will be informed of the results. Completion of any corrective action, if required, will depend on the results of the evaluation and extent of corrective action.

If the item is deemed reportable, the NRC will be so notified and the projected date of completion of corrective action and final report provided through submittal of an interim letter.
