20555 NRC DOCKETS 50-321, 50-366 OPERATING LICENSES DPR-57, tPF-5 EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1, 2 CRD SCRAM DISCHARGE VOLU E PIPING INSERVICE INSPECTION Gentlemen:

By letter dated March 5,

1982, Georgia Power Company committed to include weld examination of the CRD Scram Discharge Volume headers in the inservice inspection (ISI) program when it was to be updated in January, 1983.

This commitment was made in response to NRC concerns expressed in NUREG-0803, " Generic Safety Evaluation Report Regarding Integrity of BWR Scram System Piping."

As a result of extensive nondestructive examination and engineering support required from the Southern Company Services ISI Group, as discussed in our January 7, 1983, letter to NRC, the voluntary updating of the ISI program has been delayed until August, 1983, for both Hatch units.

A point of clarification to our January 7, 1983, letter is provided herein.

Although the program has not been updated, several CRD Scram Discharge Volume piping welds are scheduled to be examined during the current Unit 2 refueling outage.

Such examinations will be conducted in accordance with ASE code Section XI, 1980 Edition, including Addenda through Winter 1980.

This code requires surface examinations of the subject welds.

Therefore, our commitment to examine these welds will be met and is unaffected by the delay in the update of the ISI program.

Should you have any questions in this regard, please contact this office.

Sincerely yours, 8305270128 830519
