Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On September 15, 1982, Mr. W. Hehl of the NRC was notified of a potentially reportable item per provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). A structural connection designed as a friction connection was found to have evidence of grease between the mating surfaces. This item was referred to Ebasco Services, Inc. for evaluation per PW-AS-3403.
Wehavesubsequentlyidentifiedadditionalexamplesofthesameproblem.\\
Deficiency Reports (DR) are being written for each case identified to date.;l Based on engineering input, it appears that the grease will probably be acceptable; however, each connection will have to be evaluated individually as a bearing connection.
At present we are continuing our structural steel reinspection so that all connec-tions having grease can be identified and evaluated. We expect the reinspection and evaluation to be complete by April 15, 1983.
As soon as evaluation is complete, we will advise you of the status of reportability.
Yours very h q
