In th license applications for the four r.uclear units at our

!! orth Anr.a Power Station wo described the 500 kv trensmission system that will bc Installed as part of this project. These lines constitute the transmission system rcquired for the dellvory of power generated at the station into our systen c.,rld and for cceting the Commission's safety relcted requirements ulth resp:ct to off-site power. As such, these lines have been reviewed by the Staff in connection with its safety evaluation and essess:d with regard to their environ.nental effects.

., in Figuro 8.2-1 of the Final Safety Analysis Report for Units 1 and 2, we designated a future 230 kv transmission line which wauld ultinately connect in the switchyard near the florth Anna Power Station. At the time the FSAR was filed, our nanagement had not reached a final decision as to when to go ahead ulth this lino, it has now decided to proceed so that the line will be avsflable in 1976.-

Cur preferred line route extends In a southwesterly direction, passing north of Hineral, Virginia and south of Louisa Virginia, fourteen miles to a connection with en existing lino at the Louisa substation near Gordensville, Virginie. This line's purpose will be to reinforce our electric service to cur custo:crs in southside

. Virginia and to serve as an alternate source of supply should wa ex-perience an Interruption to the existing lino.

We plan to re. cot in the very near future with the appropriato State and County agencies when our refined route selection efforts, which include consideration of environmental effects, are cc.T.pletc.

~

Va.cxpect to r.ccura the necessary State and local approvals In timo to ensure that the lins can Lo operational by 1976.

It is not necessary, as are the 50] kv Ilc.cs, eithcr to carry pcwcr miay frc.7 the stetton or to provide the off-sita pc.tcr required under the /.EC's safety critoria. In short, the Station is not dc.condent on it in any way. The line is desir, ncd te provide b.ndly needed reir. forcer.ent to sout'iside Virginia, a need that is entlrcly Independent of the enlutence of the 1.' orth Anna Power Station.
