This refers to the special safety inspection conducted by Mr. J. W. Chase of this

office on May 12-19, 1982, of activities authorized by NRC Operating License
Nos. OPR-33, DPR-52, and DPR-68 for the Browns Ferry facility. Our preliminary
!
findings were discussed with Mr. G. T. Jones, Plant Superintendent, at the
]
concluion of the inspection.
Areas examined during the inspection and our findings are discussed in the
enclosed inspection report.
Within these areas, the inspection consisted of
selective examinations of procedures and representative. records, interviews with
i
personnel, and observations by the inspectors.
During the inspection, it was found that certain activities under your license
appear to violate NRC requirements.
These items and references to pertinent
requirements are listed in the Notice of Violation enclosed herewith as
.
Appendix A.

One new unresolved item is identified in the enclosed inspection report. This

item will be examined during subsequent inspections.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosures will

be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room unless you notify tdis office, by

telephone, within ten days of the date of this letter and submit written appli-
'
cation to withhold information contained therein within thirty days of the date
of this letter.
Such application must be consistent with the requirements of
2.790(b)(1).

The responses directed by this letter and the enclosures are not subject to the

clearance procedures of the Office of Management and Budget as reciuired by the
