O'Reilly United States Nuclear Regulatory Comunission Region II 101 Marietta Street, Northwest Atlanta, Georgia 30303 SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNITS 1 & 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-400, 50-401 MINIMUM WALL THICKNESS VIOLATIONS ON FUEL POOL STRAINERS Dear Mr. O'Reilly On May 19, 1982, the NRC (Mr. C. Hehl) was notified by Carolina Power & Light Company of an item considered potentially reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR, Part 21.
The NRC was informed that four fuel pool strainers supplied by Zurn Industries of Erie, Pennsylvania, were found to have end preparation counterbore thicknesses below the minimum wall thickness requirement.
The intent of this letter is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company has not been able to complete its evaluation concerning this matter due to delays in obtaining stress analysis input.
It is now anticipated that the reportability evaluation will be completed by July 16, 1982, at which time the NRC will be informed of the results. Completion of any corrective action, if required, will depend on the results of the evaluation and extent of corrective action.
If the item is deemed reportable, the NRC will be so notified and the projected date of completion of corrective action and final report provided through submittal of an interim letter.
