SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No. 50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 Date June 7, 1982 Completed By C. W. Fay Telephone 414/277-2811 Unit 2 continued in its refueling outage and maintenance work from the beginning of the month until 1857 hours0.0215 days
0.516 hours
0.00307 weeks
7.065885e-4 months
on May 26 when the unit was returned to service.

During fuel movement on May 4, a grid strap on fuel assembly J-67 was torn and that fuel assembly was replaced with another assembly from the spent fuel pool. One~of the two pieces of the fuel assembly grid strap was found in the refueling cavity near the upender and was moved to the spent fuel pit. The other piece was located in the spent fuel pit canal and remains there.

Sludge lancing was completed on May 4 and water balances showed that 37.2 of the 41.3 and 47.8 of the 53.8 gallons of sludge were removed from "A" and "B" steam generators, respectively.

As a precautionary measure following the discovery of-foreign objects in the Ginna Plant steam generators, an annular search of the secondary side of the Point Beach Unit 2 steam generators was completed on May 10. A 14-inch piece of welding rod was detected in "A" steam generator and removed. There was no visual indication of tube distress in the vicinity of the weld rod nor was there any eddy current indication of wall thinning.

The Unit 2 "A" reactor coolant pump motor was replaced and filling and venting of the reactor coolant system was completed at 0327 hours0.00378 days
0.0908 hours
5.406746e-4 weeks
1.244235e-4 months
on May 19.

Since returning to service on May 26, it was noted that gross generator output for Unit 2 has dropped from 518 MWe to 511 MWo. This loss in unit output is attributed to a feedwater temperature reduction caused by operating with the bypass of the No. 4 feedwater heaters in the full open position. The No. 4 feedwater heaters have approximately 26% of their tubes plugged and the heaters will be replaced during the next Unit 2 refueling outage.

Primary-to-secondary leakage for Unit 2 remained less than ten gallons per day subsequent to Unit 2's return to service.
