Dear Mr. Denton:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO REQUEST FROM NRR TO JAY BOUDREAU - HYDR 0 GEN BURN PROBLEM This past month Dr. Jay Boudreau, the Deputy Associate Director for Nuclear Programs at Los Alamos, asked me to provide a Los Alamos review of a memo written for Victor Benaroya, Chief of the Chemical Engineering Branch, by one of his staff, K. I. Parczewski.

The memo concerned tem-peratures reached in McGuire of certain equipment following a hydrogen bu rn.

I am attaching a copy of our staff's response to your request and I hope that you find it satisfactory.

I apologize for the delay; however,.our other commitments forced some unanticipated problems in our pursuit of the matter.

We were anxious to reply in a professional manner and as Jay indicated to me, there appeared to be some concern with NRR that Los Alamos had an abundance of computer analysts but a shortage of prac-tical engineers.

I hope that our review will show some good intuitive feel for the problem, a quality most often gained through years of experience in the field.

As Jay also indicated, Los Alamos is making a vigorous effort to provide assistance to NRR in those areas where we feel that our science and tech-nology base.can be used effectively.

The recent visit to Los Alamos by Jerry Hulman and Gary Zech supported our belief that Los Alamos can play a significant role with NRR and, in a slightly selfish mode, we recognize that our involvement with NRR can only help to give us a "real-life" perspective on the problems facing the NRC for future meaningful assignments.
