Purpose:

Discussion:
Metropolitan Edison Company (" Met Ed") is proceeding with procurement and installation of a submerged demineralizer system (SDS) as its preferred tech-nique for decontaminating the water in the TMI-2 containment building.
Het Ed takes the position that protection of the public health and safety-requires that NRC approve SDS operation as soon as the system can be installed and tested.
The NRC staff is reviewing the system and has advised Met Ed that the utility is proceeding at. its own risk pending NRC approval.
Staff's evaluation of the SDS will be ipeluded in the draft and final programmatic environmental impact statement.-
